A Pakistani government attorney claims that the United States' CIA and General Headquarters pose a serious threat to the federal government.

Kamal Azfar, before a 17-member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, said the democratic set up in the country is in danger because of the impending decision on challenges to the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO).

Azfar said that although these are his personal views, there are “extra-constitutional forces within and outside the country” that could derail the democratic set up.

He went on to say that he filed the statement in the Supreme Court on behalf of the Law Ministry.

“Look what we have done to Pakistan, which otherwise (was) destined to become an Asian tiger, but one prime minister, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, was hanged while the other, Benazir Bhutto, was killed,” Azfar lamented.

The bench asked the federal government to file a written statement on the concern expressed by the lawyer, while the judge said if there were threats from the CIA or the GHQ, these concerned the executive. Chaudhry stated that the court is tasked with guarding democracy and the rule of law.

Azfar's remarks in the court sent ripples across the country the moment they were broadcast on television. In the evening, Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani met Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, and though no details were available, the matter was believed to have come up during their discussion.
