December 31, 2009

This is the third anniversary of the martyrdom of Iraq President Saddam Hussein. It is an occasion to reflect on his qualities and qualifications as the greatest of Arab resisters and the most unwavering champion of the Arab nation. We may do so by citing authoritative and eloquent Islamic, Arab and even American sources, as well as the words of the man himself, as he addressed Americans and his fellow Iraqis from captivity and as he faced his martyrdom.

We will begin with the Editor of the Islamic "New Trend", Dr. Kaukab Siddique, who outlined and summarized Saddam's heroic struggle in the following terms:

"Under the most severe sanctions and embargo in the history of modern times, he kept the Iraqi people united and refused to surrender Iraq's sovereignty...
"Saddam knew that the U.S. had decided to attack Iraq with overwhelming military force but he refused to surrender. Russia offered him a chance to spend the rest of his life in luxury in a dacha in the Crimea but he refused.
"Owing to Saddam's persistent support for the Palestinian people and for martyrdom operations against Israel, every Zionist Jew in America, from professor to politician, raised a storm of dirty propaganda against him. It was evident that International Jewry would destroy Iraq.
"The choice before Saddam was to die like a lion or live like a jackal. He decided to die like a lion.
"Famed U.S. novelist (Tom) Clancy, closely connected to the military establishment, revealed that the U.S. tried to kill Saddam 33 times during the sanctions decade before the war.
"When the massive bombardment of Baghdad known as 'Shock and Awe' began, the primary target was Saddam. A superpower was trying to kill the President of a sovereign nation. Saddam decided to go down fighting.
"When the U.S. actually captured Baghdad and occupied Iraq with 135,000 heavily-armed troops with tremendous firepower, Saddam went underground and continued to lead the Resistance. The President had become the Mujahedeen, a first in modern Arab history! Saddam's sons and his grandson went down fighting against the occupation forces.
"After nearly nine months of fighting, the Americans captured Saddam. Among his meager possessions was a little notebook in which he kept account of every dollar he spent in the Jihad. Such was his honesty.
"During the show trial which was held to 'convict' the mujahid President, it became apparent that the charges against him were bogus. His attorneys were terrorized and the witnesses against him remained concealed. He stood strong throughout the trial, constantly seeking inspiration from the Qur'an and urging the Iraqi people to resist the occupation.
"Finally the U.S. arrived at its pre-determined plan to execute Saddam. This execution on 'Eid day was a slap in the face of the entire Islamic world.
"Saddam went to his martyrdom with a demeanor which was so calm, spiritual and full of the light of faith in Allah that people could see what a martyr is like: unafraid, focused on the honor of Iraq and the Arab and Muslim people and admonishing his Shi'ite executioners about their shameful behavior as agents of America."

Saddam's martyrdom inspired Layla Anwar, author of the blog-site "Arab Woman Blues" to address him as in these terms:

"Forgive me, Sir, I am not a very sophisticated woman. I speak a simple language, the language of the heart. No one hardly ever recognizes this dialect these days. But I have a feeling that, despite all your alleged hardness, You would.
"You know, my Dad before passing away said to me a few sentences that have remained with me since. He said 'My daughter, many things will come to pass in this life. You will face many trials and many errors. One thing you need to be certain of, though, don't ever lose your integrity or your dignity. The day you sell those, you will have sold your soul, and all is downhill from there.
"Sir, I am proud that you have not sold either. In that, you have helped us preserve our own intact. As for the rest, don't worry about them. They will end up cited as thugs, profiteering, sectarian, opportunistic hypocrites.
" What pains me most is that they succeeded in massacring yet another True Iraqi, a True Iraqi among many thousands. And that is what you are."

Saddam addressed the American people directly from his captivity in a handwritten letter dated July 7th, 2006, less than six months before his martyrdom:

"People of America, I address you not from weakness nor as a supplicant. I, my people, my brothers, comrades, my nation, we address you on the basis of our moral and human responsibility. I tell you that officials whom you know, and first among them your President, lied to you and deceived you and tricked you, using the media that portrayed Iraq to you as incorrigible and Saddam Hussein as a hateful dictator, and that his people hate him and are just waiting for their chance to get at him. Some of them just wallowed in lying falsehood to the point that they openly declared that the Iraqis would meet the invading armies with roses and celebration.
"I know that lots of people don't do a lot of analysis; they don't have the time or the ability or the desire to do careful assessments when presented with falsified news so as to uncover the truth. The American people had no chance to inquire, for example, why, if the people of Iraq hate Saddam Hussein, how he managed to defeat the Iran of Khomeini after eight years in the aggressive war that Iran sought to impose on us under the slogan of exporting the revolution beginning with Iraq? People of America, the victory over Khomeini's Iran was not due to the short length of the war, but came only after eight years of grinding warfare in which tens of thousands fell, hundreds of thousands on the Iranian side.
"If Saddam Hussein were a dictator, why did he establish a parliament with elections for the first time in the year 1980 during wartime, when there had been no parliament in Iraq since 1958? If he and his government were dictators, how could he visit schools, universities, towns and villages and spend the night with the people wherever the sun went down? How could he travel around and lead at he battle front during the day, even in the trenches in the front lines on the battlefield among the Muslim soldiers?
"Yes, esteemed ladies and gentlemen, your government deceived you, and you, or rather most of you, had no chance to inquire of themselves or of others in order to discover the truth because the Zionists in the lobby who advocated the war together with some of the centers of power were deceiving you and tricking you, hiding from your eyes the real truth, exchanging the facts for falsified and slanted information. Last but not least in this regard, if Saddam Hussein were a dictator hated and despised by his people, how is it that his people endured him and why was he chosen President by referendum?
"People of America, the misfortunes that have afflicted you and afflicted our Arab Nation and within it our heroic Iraqi people, including the breakdown of America's standing and reputation, were only caused by the reckless behavior of your government and by pressure from Zionism and power centers that influenced your government to commit those crimes and scandalous actions for specific ends that have nothing to do with the interests of the American people. The massacres and the blood flows in the streets and countryside of Iraq in torrents and the responsibility for that falls on America before all others. You know, or rather you have now come to learn, that neither the stooges whom the Americans brought in on board their aircraft or as shamefaced presents aboard their tanks, nor Iran, which pushed and still pushes forward those who support it and whom they support, would be able to cause the bloodshed or the destruction of the honor and the
property of our people and our state had not America undertaken the aggression and invasion and issued the orders, It is still issuing orders in the Green Zone. Therefore America bears the burden of all those crimes and outrages. So, will you put an end to what is going on by using the methods of direct truth without evasion and digression, or will you invite the machine of death to continue to eat away at the flesh of Iraqis and the flesh of Americans without doing anything to resolve this?"

Jeff Archer, President of the Palestine Iraq Center, distinguished American writer and investigative journalist and author of the incomparable "The Mother of All Battles", the authoritative book on the U.S. war against Iraq, brought out many little-know facts about Saddam's Arab Ba'ath Socialist Party-led government and its accomplishments in the face of the obstacles imposed by Imperialist and Zionist assaults. Besides the monumental advances in education, literacy, medicine, housing, women's rights and the welfare of children and the elderly, Archer noted:

"Many western observers are not aware that Saddam Hussein was well-regarded in much of the world. Brazilians remember that thousands of their countrymen were recruited by Saddam to build the advanced highway and bridge systems that once crisscrossed Iraq. Egyptians did not forget that two million of their countrymen owned and worked land in Iraq prior to January 1991.
"The Lebanese remembered the dozens of Iraqi trucks that showed up daily at the Lebanese border during that country's civil war. They were laden with food and clothing for any Lebanese person in need. The convoys' recipients included all Lebanese, not just certain factions of those battling in the civil war. Most Palestinians display a picture of Saddam Hussein on their walls. Over the years, many nations have temporarily supported the Palestinian cause, only to withdraw aid once threatened by the U.S. Saddam Hussein, even during the embargo years, supported the Palestinians with no exception, while other Arab regimes did not want to get involved because they did not want to upset their puppeteers in Washington and Tel Aviv."

In his Final Will, dated 26 December 2006, four days before his execution, Saddam displayed his magnanimity and his steely resolve and commitment to Iraq and the pursuit of social justice and liberation. Speaking to the Iraqi people, he exhorted them in the following fashion:

"The enemies of your country, whether they are invaders or Persians, found that (your) unity prevented them from enslaving you. Thus they drove their old-new wedge in the midst of you and the foreigners with Iraqi nationality responded; the hearts of these foreigners were wither already full of hatred or the envious in Iran filled them with hatred.
"They thought (that) they would vanquish you through sowing division between you and the true sons of the people in order to weaken the will and turn the sons of the country against each other rather than turn them against the real enemies. In order to confront the real enemies, we all have to pull together, even if we act under different banners...
"Brothers, mujahideen and fighters, I call on you to do this, and to abandon malice, because malice does not leave the one who harbors it any chance to be fair and just, and because it closes the minds. Malice takes the one who harbors it away from balanced thinking, correct choices, avoiding what is wrong, and prevents him from seeing the changes in the minds of those he thinks to be enemies, especially the delinquent ones who repent and go back to the true path, the path of the true people and the glorious nation.
"Brothers and sisters, my sons and sons of Iraq, comrade strugglers, I call on you not to hate the peoples of the countries that have committed aggression on us. I call on you to distinguish between the decision-makers and the people. Hate only the deed. Even if someone's deeds deserve to be fought, do not hate him as a human being. Do not hate the individuals who do evil, hate only the evil deed itself, and repel that evil as it deserves."

Layla Anwar summarizes the purport of Saddam's life, struggle and martyrdom as he approached the hour of supreme sacrifice:

"They say you were authoritarian and totalitarian. Come and see them now. See their fascism infesting the streets. See it in every neighborhood, see it in every corner. You said Women are the pioneers of this Arab Ummah, come and look at us now. Rape has replaced sexual intercourse, censorship has replaced education and forced domestication has replaced public life.
"You said Education is the sign of a Progressive Ummah. Our schools and universities are empty, and our brains drained and killed. You said Health is Free for all. Our hospitals are dilapidated and our doctors in exile. You said Kurds are our brothers, they are now trained as snipers by Israel. You said Christians and Muslims are part of this mosaic called Iraq. The Christians are fleeing by the thousands and the churches are deserted.
"Look at me Sir. I am a product of this wonderful mosaic called Iraq. I am half Muslim and half Christian, and the Muslim half has Shi'as and if you dig hard enough you will find Kurdish, Armenian, Turkish, Chaldean, Arabic roots all the way back...
"Where is my place now Sir? You are about to find your place soon, like a bird flying to nest into the arms of the sky, while I am left behind waiting my turn, and in the meantime searching, desperately searching for a place to rest my tired head, and finding none.
"Sir, I heard they will execute You within 36 hours, in time for the 'Eid, our sacrificial feast. You did say you are willing to be sacrificed for Iraq. You still believe they are worth it. I envy your Faith. May you go in Peace now, my True Iraqi."

Such a one as Saddam Hussein will never die. He will always live in the hearts and souls of the honest, suffering, dispossessed people, wherever people face slavery and oppression and whenever they fight for justice and dignity. He will abide forever, long after the Bushes, Clintons, Obamas and the predatory denizens of Congress, the Pentagon, the CIA, the State Department and Wall Street have gone to the final and lasting hell which they deserve, long after the exploiters and oppressors and their minions have rotted into oblivion.

Saddam Hussein will remain and endure as a shining light, an immortal in the pantheon of the truly great, a testament and an example to all that we could be, should be and need to be if we indeed seek to better ourselves and our world.

Alert: “Prepare For Rebellion”, Obama Orders US-Canadian Troops

from : http://pakalert.wordpress.com

Kremlin position papers presented to Prime Minister Putin today on his upcoming meeting with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen state that the European-US military alliance has authorized an ‘emergency request’ from President Obama to utilize American and Canadian NATO troops to put down what is expected to be a “rebellion” after the expected January, 2010 ‘declaration of bankruptcy’ by the State of California.

According to these reports, Obama’s fears of rebellion are due to the economic health of California (the United States largest State) after the 3rd largest US State, New York, declared a ‘fiscal emergency’ and refused to release to its cities and towns over $750 Million due them this past week with the Governor of New York, David Paterson, declaring “I can’t say this enough: The state has run out of money.

New York’s fiscal crisis, however, pales in comparison to California’s, where new economic data points to its expected 5-year budget deficit reaching the staggering amount of over $100 Billion which Russian economists warn will result in budget cuts so steep as to create ‘social chaos’ among this States 36 million citizens.

Reports from the United States are, indeed, confirming the mass movement of military supplies and thousands of Canadian Special Forces Troops to California from the Canadian Forces Base of Petawawa to join their American military counterparts, with ‘secondary’ reports stating that at least 1,000 tanks are massing their too.

Russian Military Analysts are further warning in this report that Obama has decided to implement the feared RAND Corporation (one of the most powerful research arms of the US Military-Industrial-Homeland Security Complex) police state ‘blueprint’ tilted “Stability Police Force for the United States: Justification and Creating U.S. Capabilities” that has been modeled on the Nazi German secret police forces organization Geheime Staatspolizei (Gestapo) meant to ‘control and demoralize’ any opposition to the state.

Even worse for these American people is the legalization process currently embedded in their new health care legislation which will see everyone of them becoming virtual slaves of their government, and as warned about by the Fox News Service in their report titled “Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid of Obama’s Latest Big Brother Plan” and which says:

“Under the Democrats’ national health care scheme not only would OPM be charged with overseeing and administering federal employees health care but they will have the added charge of administering civilian federal health care as well. What does that mean? Basically, that Americans will be treated as “civil servants.” Are you starting to see the danger?

The more government seeks to control our lives the more Orwellian it gets. This “big brother” mentality that “government knows best” and that it is their mission to provide cradle to grave “care” of its citizens will doom America as we know it. Under such a system the individual becomes meaningless and the state becomes the entity upon which we are all forced to rely.”

Unfortunately, with or without these Americans succumbing to the loss of their Nation through the establishment of a police state, their fate appears to have already been sealed as new reports are showing that by their continued saving they are failing to provide China with the money needed through the buying of goods to purchase US bonds to keep them afloat, and which has led to the incredible circumstance of the United States, through its Federal Reserve and other financial entities, becoming the largest buyers of their own debt.

Not being seen in all of these dire events by the American people is that their present collapse as an independent Nation was engineered by their own President Obama, who working in concert with the previous President, George Bush, sold them out to Wall Street by packing his administration with banking insiders have, literally, pillaged the entire economic future of the United States for the benefit of their elite classes and, incredibly, supported these once collapsing banks with over $352 Billion in drug money.

And so grave has it become for ordinary Americans that new reports are now showing that in what was once the most powerful Nation on Earth, there now exists an ‘epidemic’ of child hunger and one their fastest growing cities is a tent-town of newly homeless named “Obamaville” in a stark reminder of the thousands of shanty towns named Hoovervilles built during the Great Depression.

For those American people believing their propaganda media reports that a recovery is underway they couldn’t be more mistaken, as newly released data shows that of the millions of jobs lost these past 2 years almost all of them are permanent. And, as always, these people are being kept from knowing the full and brutal truth of their economic collapse with reports also showing that the latest unemployment figures released by the US government were faked.

But to the greatest fears of these Americans should be the newly released information showing that US scientists have perfected, for the first time in history, a new drugless technique to wipe from these people’s minds their very own memories, and as we can read:

“In a scientific experiment that brings to mind the memory-erasing escapade in the 2004 film “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” scientists have blocked fearful recollections in human participants, sans drugs. The results challenge the view that our long-term memories are fixed and resistant to change.”

Russian Military Psychologists have long warned that the West’s longest term plan to control their soon to be rebellious populations lie in memory altering techniques such as are being perfected in the United States and due to be deployed through their mass media in radio programmes, television, and movie broadcasts outlets as these Nations past reliance on the drugging of their citizens through mass fluoridation is becoming more and more ineffectual.

Important to note too is that the economic collapse of the United States is just one of the catastrophic dangers they are facing, as this past week the giant plant genetics company Bayer admitted in a US Federal Court that it has been “unable to control the spread of its genetically-engineered organisms despite ‘the best practices’ to stop widespread contamination” and which may very well see the destruction of the American’s ability to feed themselves as these ‘monster plants’ reap their destruction on Nature.

To all of these events, it is not in our knowing if the American people will awaken from their self induced slumber to arise, as they have many times throughout their history, to reclaim for themselves what is now rapidly being stolen from them. But, and if their present actions are a predictor to what they may do in the future, one can only fear for them as they are marched in lockstep towards an abyss they only fail to see because they won’t open their eyes.

I don't agree with Ron Paul on a lot of issues, but one of them I do agree with him with is our military presence in the Middle East being one of the causes of terrorism. Ben Stein acts like he's never heard such a thing and the conversation gets pretty heated with Sheila Jackson Lee stuck in the middle. I have a very hard time believing that Ben Stein has never heard that argument made before. Saying you disagree with it is one thing. Pretending you've never heard the argument made is ridiculous.

I agree with something Rep. Lee managed to get in the end there as well. President Obama should do a recess appointment for the head of TSA to combat the Republicans obstructionism.

Transcript via CNN.

KING: Ron Paul, you want to respond first to the congresswoman and then Ben.

PAUL: Yes, I do.

KING: Go ahead.

PAUL: One thing that is missing here is never asking the question what is the motive? He said why he was -- he did it. He said it was because we bombed Yemen two weeks ago. That was his motive. Osama bin Laden said that he has a plan for America. First, he wants to bog us down in the Middle East in a no-win war. He wants to bankrupt this country, demoralize us, as well as have us do things that motivate people to join his radical movement.

It seems like we've fallen into his trap. Why is it off base? Today, when the gentleman indicated that he did it because of the bombing, you know what the administration said? They dismissed it. It can't possibly be so. If you dismiss motivations for why they hate us, we can never resolve this. There's hate on both sides. You have to ask the question, why do they hate? And they usually come up with a reason. And we're foolish not to take that into consideration.

KING: Ben?

STEIN: Well, that's -- I have never heard anything quite like that in my whole life. What he's saying, basically, is we are doing something wrong by defending ourselves. Look, if these terrorists are trying to kill the government of Yemen, we've got to help defend them. They're our friends. We can't just let al Qaeda run wild. If we try to stop them --

PAUL: Why?

STEIN: Why should we stop them? Because they are terrorists and murderers and they're very anti-American.

PAUL: Why are they terrorists?

STEIN: Surely congressman --

PAUL: Why are they terrorists?

STEIN: They're terrorists and murders because they are psychos.

PAUL: They're terrorists because we're occupiers.

(CROSS TALK)

STEIN: No, we're not occupiers. That's the same anti-Semitic argument we've heard.

PAUL: Now that is a vicious attack. You --

(CROSS TALK)

STEIN: It's not a vicious attack.

LEE: Larry, I'd like to respond to some of these points that are being made.

KING: Let's go back to Sheila.

(CROSS TALK)

KING: Look at this, folks. Two republicans going at it. This is fascinating. With a democratic liberal in the middle.

LEE: I can referee between the two of them.

(CROSS TALK)

LEE: Let me referee, please.

KING: All right. Sheila, say something.

LEE: Yeah, let me referee, please. That is interesting.

KING: Both have good points, right?

LEE: They have good points. Let me clarify and try to say that Congressman Paul has a point on our positions that we took in Iraq, which obviously created a very terrible atmosphere, and we all asked the questions what were the results. And, of course, Afghanistan is still a question. But we must be reminded that the terrorists acted under President Bush's clock. And so this can't be an issue of the president's inactivity, per se, and a lack of commitment to the homeland.

But we have to do better. And I believe we need to have behavioral assessment. There was no reason for this individual to have a visa that still was in place until 2010 for them to be able to travel. There was no reason for him not to be detected because of his behavior. Behavioral assessment. We need to make the homeland security of the nation focus. Secretary of Homeland Secretary should be the point person and that person should establish a road map that then allows us to fund and to put resources accordingly. And finally, the president --

KING: Guys, we're out of time.

LEE: The president should put in place the NTSA administrator by way of a recess appointment.

KING: Death, taxes and these three are going to be back tomorrow.

Yes, Yemen Has Oil

from : http://www.washingtonsblog.com

Yes, Yemen has oil.

The Middle Eastern nation - in the south of the Arabian Peninsula, bordering the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Red Sea - has been exporting a couple of billion dollars worth of crude oil per year.

But it's oil supplies are shrinking rapidly, and may be totally depleted within 10 years.

As the Yemen Observer notes:

Yemeni crude oil exports decreased to $1.5 billion during the fiscal period from January –October of 2009, compared with $4.2 billion during the same period of 2008, a decrease of $2.7 billion, the Central Bank of Yemen reported.

And the World Tribune points out:

The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace said Yemen was rapidly losing its crude oil reserves.

In a report, Carnegie said Yemeni oil exports, a key source of foreign currency, declined from 450,000 barrels per day in 2003 to 280,000 in early 2009, Middle East Newsline reported.

"Barring any major new discoveries, energy experts generously estimate that Yemen's oil exports will cease in 10 years," the report, titled "Yemen: Avoiding a Downward Spiral," said.

Not Another Terror Decade

from : http://www.forbes.com

Michael Maiello, 12.28.09, 12:01 AM EST

The U.S. needs to let go of that war.

The United States spent the first decade of the 20th century at war. To sum up our opponents or motives at this point is unnecessary. We all know. But I can't help but wonder if it's not a coincidence that those years the U.S. devoted to military conflicts and existential security threats came to nothing economically.

On Christmas day, early reports say, a 23-year-old Nigerian named Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab attempted to bring down a flight from Holland to Detroit by igniting some sort of incendiary chemical agents that he had concealed in his pants. Fellow passengers and the flight crew neutralized his weapon and subdued him. He reportedly claimed to have been acting under orders from al-Qaida. Abdulmutallab may well be telling the truth. A Christmas day attack at the end of the decade certainly fits the theatrical needs of an international terror syndicate. Or maybe he's deluded about the extent of his own connections and importance to his cause. It doesn't matter, even a failed attack serves to remind the Western world that, al-Qaida affiliation or not, there are some people out there who are ideologically convinced that murdering civilians is both justified and necessary. I'm more concerned about what this means for the United States and whether it will spend the next decade in a massive, distracting war that will sacrifice the ambitions and needs of yet another generation.

Since I became truly aware of politics, history and economics in the 1990s, it's only natural for me to compare this decade to that one. As I graduated from high school, went to college and entered the job market, two U.S. presidents used the military for finite causes. U.S. forces expelled Iraq from Kuwait. They captured the president of Panama. They helped force a ceasefire in what was Yugoslavia on my childhood globe. When it looked like a military action could get out of hand and that victory couldn't even be defined much less achieved (Somalia), the President brought American soldiers home. Though it is said that the first Iraq war cured America of "Vietnam Syndrome," George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton still approached military matters with an abundance of caution. For that, Clinton is still criticized for failing to intervene in the Rwandan genocide, and for putting too much faith in the idea that Osama bin Laden could be picked off from afar by launching a few cruise missiles.

The first President Bush got high marks for his foreign policy (he knew how to bring other countries together despite the chaos of the Soviet Union's dissolution) and his handling of the first Iraq war (he knew how to define and accomplish his mission), but was seen as out of touch on domestic issues (he didn't know about supermarket bar code scanners). A major recession led by the financial sector, along with the beginning of the outsourcing of American manufacturing, meant that voters, after spending decades as Cold Warriors on high alert, wanted to see some problems fixed at home first. That Bush presided over the L.A. riots in 1992 hurt his credibility as the keeper of domestic order and prosperity.

Yes, there were major foreign policy issues during the nineties, but the fact that a computer network developed for the military came to dominate civilian life and commerce illustrates the post-Cold War change in focus. "Make dot-coms, not bombs" would have been an apt way for those ex-hippies with venture capital funds to put it. ( Uh ... no one ever put it that way.)

For Americans, most of the major problems of the 1990s were domestic. The U.S. had its first health care debates, while affirmative action, political correctness and civil rights for homosexuals were the hot-button social issues. The largest threats to U.S. security seemed to be domestic. Al-Qaida's first attack on the World Trade Center was eclipsed two years later by Timothy McVeigh's attack on the Oklahoma City Federal building. For the U.S. the '90s really were a domestic decade, and in 2000 George W. Bush and Al Gore ran neck in neck for the presidency while arguing about taxes, free trade and the environment, with both agreeing that they would walk into the White House looking for a fight.
Related Stories

When the fight happened, I, like pretty much everyone I knew, supported Bush's decision to send troops to Afghanistan. Now take this for what it's worth because I don't know anything about fighting wars, but given my limited knowledge of U.S. military engagements until that point, I never would have taken seriously, even for a moment, the notion that I would find myself writing at the end of 2009 about our ongoing involvement in a war there. Yes, I knew that the Soviet Union had become entangled in Afghanistan in the same way that the U.S. found itself mired in Vietnam, but to me it seemed that U.S. aims were quite simple compared to what the Soviets wanted. The U.S. mission was to destroy al-Qaida and, along the way, the dictatorship that was harboring the people who attacked the U.S.

Eight years later we're dealing with a would-be terrorist who claims al-Qaida membership, and oh by the way, all the big decision makers in that organization may be in Yemen. People should take this to mean that the threat is still out there (it will always be out there), but I hope that President Obama doesn't take this to mean that another decade of war is acceptable even if it's undesirable.

The rise of China as a major U.S. creditor coincides with the cost of two off-balance-sheet foreign occupations being added to the U.S. budget. While the U.S. tried to eliminate al-Qaida by engaging in costly efforts to spread democracy in the Middle East, other threats emerged. al-Qaida, or people who claim to be members, or just claim some allegiance, or are just branding themselves, have moved into Africa, Southeast Asia and beyond. Meanwhile, China, Iran, India, North Korea and Pakistan have all threatened American hegemony by either being or going nuclear. Enough. In the teenage years of the 21st century, the U.S. had better figure out that attention must be paid--not so much to al-Qaida but rather to our real political and economic rivals. Let's not remain consumed with nut jobs and their shoe bombs while China trades AK-47s for rights to resources throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

I don't know what happened on that plane on Christmas day, but whatever is finally revealed, I fear that it will once again inflate the importance of al-Qaida and blind the U.S. to the truly important rivals and challenges of a new era.

How Many More Theatres of War Will the U.S. Participate In? Where is the Money Coming From?

I was yet again not surprised to see the world's police force flexing its muscles in another corner of the globe and who asked for US involvement? Yes you guessed right, the Nobel Peace Prize President and the one that promised everyone change!

We know see much activity on the Saudi - Yemen border where Muslims are fighting their brothers and the good old US of A is there right behind them.

So what is this conflict all about that has been burning away in the background of world politics? It all about power sharing in the Middle East.....US backed Saudi Arabia versus Iranian backed Yemen. The conflict in northern Yemen began in 2004 between Sana'a and Houthi fighters but it intensified in August 2009 when the Yemeni army launched Operation Scorched Earth in an attempt to crush the fighters in the northern province of Sa'ada.

One can understand regional situation developing from time to time as we have seen in the UK with Northern Ireland but surely this conflict involves only those of the Islamic Faith and should be settle by their own means. Why is the US again flexing its muscle on Islamic Soil?

We see them currently assisting in putting a wedge between Israel, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon and the pay off of Egypt in its continued isolation of Gaza. On top of this we have major conflict zones still under US military operations Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and now Yemen.

Why did this President that was swept into power by people who trusted him suddenly turned his back on those that gave him the privilege of serving his people. When will this President, who received an award for peace, start earning this prestigious award and actually stop all existing US conflicts and bring the troops home.

Let's just look into the activities that are currently taking place in Yemen. Yet again we see innocent civilians falling victim to sophisticated disproportionate power. Two days ago at least 13 civilians lost their lives in a series of air strikes by Saudi military aircraft along the border between Yemen and Saudi Arabia. The Americans for their part are totally doing their own thing when one report stated that the Saudi and US air forces have further complicated the conflict by launching their own operations against Shia resistance fighters......Sound familiar?

One report said that US Special Forces have been sent to Yemen to prevent the country from turning into a "reserve base" for al-Qaeda. The move to strengthen Yemen's army comes at a time that the country's army is not fighting with al-Qaeda militants, who are based in the southern part of the country. What a wonderful foreign policy Obama has under his control. At the end of the day he's the "Commander in Chief" and only he authorizes such actions. (Did he tuck his Nobel Peace Prize in his bottom draw whilst he made that decision?).....oh well its back on the wall now for all to see!

© AP Photo
Doesn't this Al Qaeda talk really make your blood boil when we all know that the US really is not making any effort to deal with Al Qaeda (that is to say if they even exist?). They, whoever they are, are actively operating in Pakistan according to Obama and his puppet Gordon Brown has re enforced this by stating that the enemies of our country are now in Pakistan. Maybe soon we will see the US drag NATO into Yemen.....after all it only takes one Yemen based attack against a US target to bring them onboard based on their new constitution that "An attack on one is an attack on all"

So we now have US Special Forces operating inside Iran with the help of another group they support with arms and finances (the Kurdish Group PJAK), We had four American arrested in North Pakistan, dressed like Taliban, loaded with weapons but hey!....they were only tourists on a mountain trek or could they be the AQ they are all looking for but never catch?....we have the same in Somalia and now Yemen......not a problem folks......remember the Fed Reserve printing press is still in full swing!

The Saudis are currently in panic mode as they do not have the experience to deal with any overspill of Yemeni Shi'ites into Saudi territory. One must remember that Saudi is very pro US and therefore automatically becomes a target for those that do not support the presence of US Military bases on Islamic soil. It would appear that the Saudi Government is seeking the help from Jordan to provide them with elite Special Forces. Needless to say the US is right there without being asked...

Doctor admits vaccine is more deadly than 'swine flu' itself and will not give it to his kids

Remember the swine flu was supposed to sweep the earth, creating a deadly pandemic that was going to turn world inside out?

We said it was overhyped.

We said it was a scam to sell vaccines.

We said is was a way for our do-nothing, rip-off government to distract us from their non-stop criminality.

We said the media was full of shit (again) and was not to be trusted.

We were right.

But the laws that were passed in the midst of the manufactured hysteria, the ones that require people to submit to vaccines or face fines, property seizure and arrest are still on the books.

By the way, don't you love the "symptoms of swine flu" Fox was peddling:

1. fatigue
2. cough
3. sore throat

That describes just about anything.

Egypt Says It Will Block International Gaza Freedom Marchers

from : http://alethonews.wordpress.com

By Robert Naiman | December 21, 2009

On December 31, together with more than 1000 peace advocates from around the world, I’m planning to join tens of thousands of Palestinians in a march in Gaza to the Erez border crossing to protest the Israeli blockade of Gaza, and to demand international action to relieve Gaza’s humanitarian crisis.

Unfortunately, it appears that the Egyptian government has just announced that it will not allow the internationals to enter Gaza as planned. If so, that would be a shame.

But this apparent decision could be reversed with sufficient public pressure, in Egypt and around the world. Concerned individuals can write to the Egyptian Embassy in Washington and to the Foreign Ministry in Cairo. There is also contact information for the Egyptian consulates in Chicago, Houston, New York, and San Francisco here.

The aim of the march is to call on Israel and the international community to lift the siege, and to respond to Gaza’s humanitarian crisis. The international participants will also take in badly needed medical aid, as well as school supplies and winter jackets for the children of Gaza. Dec. 27 will mark the first anniversary of the Israeli invasion, from which Gaza has not recovered, in large measure because of the ongoing Israeli blockade, which has prevented Gaza from rebuilding.

Of course, if the Egyptian government decision stands, and the international participants are not allowed to enter Gaza, then much less international attention will be drawn to the ongoing blockade, and that would be an unfortunate setback for peace efforts, because the need for international attention is great.

Viral video suggests Berlusconi attack was faked

A You Tube video which suggests the attack on Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was faked has become an overnight sensation.

Berlusconi, 73, was hit in the face with a souvenir marble and metal replica of Milan's famous Gothic cathedral following a political rally and suffered a fractured nose and two broken teeth.

TV footage of the politician showing him bleeding profusely from cuts to his lips and gums went around the world in a matter of seconds and were seen by millions.

However, today a video posted on You Tube suggesting the attack in Milan was faked had received almost 500,000 hits in just a matter of hours.

Called 'Was the attack on Berlusconi a montage?' the video lasts eight minutes and is on a par with other past conspiracy theories such as the attack on the Twin Towers being a CIA created plot.

The video's author is unidentified but using footage and still photographs it raises questions regarding several key moments in the aftermath of last Sunday's attack in Milan.

It asks why the blood on Berlusconi's face appears to be 'thick and already' set and also asks why if as the hospital later said he had lost 'half a litre of blood' is his suit and shirt not drenched.

Also highlighted in a security guard who is seen handing Berlusconi something in his car and the video suggests that it is a 'aerosol spray containing fake blood.'

The video then goes on to ask viewers to 'switch off the TV and use your brains' and adds that the attack by graphic designer Massimo Tartaglia, 42, was nothing more than a 'self styled plot.'

Following the attack Berlusconi was taken to hospital where e he was kept in for four days before being discharged and told by doctors to 'take complete rest for the next fifteen days.'

Political commentators immediately said that the former cruise ship crooner would win sympathy from Italians for the attack and yesterday one poll showed Berlusconi having a 66 per cent popularity rating - a jump of 20 per cent in just week.

Supporters from his People of Freedom party dismissed the conspiracy theory video - which was being sent on via Facebook and email around the world - with Danielle Capezzone saying it was 'absurd.'

He added: 'I have seen this video and segments of others and I think what we are dealing here is micro terrorism.

'I can see in these people the same ideology as people who use violence - you just have to see the footage to see this attack was very real.

'These people are deny the evidence and trying to create something out of nothing.

'I can't believe people are questioning the attack just because they think Berlusconi wasn't bleeding properly or enough.'

some wake up ! Veterans Group Calls on Soldiers to Refuse Orders to Deploy to Afghanistan and Iraq

from : http://globalresearch.ca/

Global Research, December 16, 2009
Truthout - 2009-12-14

StumbleUpon Submit

In response to President Barack Obama's announcement on December 1 to deploy 30,000 additional troops to the occupation of Afghanistan, the organization March Forward!, with comprising both veterans and active-duty members of the US military, has called on all soldiers to refuse their orders to deploy.

"March Forward! calls on all service members to refuse orders to deploy to Afghanistan and Iraq," reads a press release from the group from December 3. "We offer our unconditional support and solidarity. Join us in the fight to ensure that no more soldiers or civilians lose their lives in these criminal wars."

Michael Prysner, a former corporal in the Army who served from 2001-2005 and a veteran of the occupation of Iraq, co-founded the group with another Iraq war veteran, James Circello.

Truthout asked Prysner how he responds to those who believe a soldier should always follow orders, no matter what.

"In my experience the majority of people joining the military today join out of necessity, like money, jobs, help for their family, etc., so most don't join for ideological or patriotic reasons. Most are driven into the military by economic conditions. We see this playing out now, as people are joining in droves because of the economy."

Prysner added, "Yes, people do sign a contract to follow orders, but those orders are wrong and unlawful. We want to educate people to the fact that these are immoral orders, and they [soldiers] are being used as muscle for corporations, to colonize the developing world, and it's not legitimate. People who join and take this oath seriously who think they are in [the military] to defend the US, this is not what we are being used for in the military today."

Prysner has written about his experience in Iraq, "... there was no computer screen separating me from the suffering civilian population. I spent 12 months in Iraq, doing everything from prisoner interrogations, to ground surveillance missions, to home raids. It was my firsthand experiences in Iraq that radicalized me. I believed I was going to Iraq to help liberate and better the lives of an oppressed people, but I soon realized that my purpose in Iraq was to be the oppressor, and to clear the way for US corporations with no regard for human life."

After he separated from the Army in 2005, Prysner "understood that the occupation I was a part of was a crime against humanity. I understood that illegal conquering of Iraq was for profit, carried out by a system that serves a tiny class of super-rich whose endless drive for wealth is at the expense of working people in the United States and abroad."

According to Prysner, the lessons he learned from being part of the US occupation of Iraq taught him that, "I still had the same drive to fight for freedom, justice and equality as I did when I joined, and I understood that fighting for those things meant fighting against the US government, not on behalf of it."

To those who call him and his organization "anti-American" and/or "unpatriotic," Prysner has this to say:

"I would say that I have more in common with my sisters and brothers in Iraq and Afghanistan than I do with these people in DC who've sent us to war. If that's unpatriotic, then yes, I am. But patriotism and racism are the only things the military has to fall back on to convince people to do the things we are being asked to do today."

March Forward! was founded in 2008, and the aim of the organization is "to unite all those who have served and who currently serve in the US military, and who want to stand up for our rights and for that which is right."

"We are new and growing," Prysner explained. "We have seen somewhat consistent growth, and we're expecting this to accelerate now."

The group's statement from December 3 adds, "On December 1, we got a clear order from President Obama. For many more years, we will be sent to kill, to die, to be maimed and wounded, in a war where 'victory' is impossible, against a people who are not our enemies. For over eight years, we have come home in coffins, in wheelchairs, with our skin burned and with our days and nights haunted by the trauma of war. We return home to a VA whose services are so inadequate that active duty soldiers who succumb to suicide outnumber those killed in combat."

James Circello is a former Army sergeant and veteran of the US occupation of Iraq. Circello, who joined the military in 2001, describes his experience in Iraq as follows:

"During the occupation of Iraq, the truth about what the United States government has done to the country of Iraq became more apparent. Open wastewater flowed through neighborhood streets where children played soccer. Families were thrown out of their homes with simple accusations from others. Vehicles were taken on sight by the military if individuals couldn't provide proper documents claiming they own the vehicle. These events and others helped in strengthening my opposition to the so-called 'War on Terror.'"

In April 2007, Circello left his base in Vicenza, Italy, and went absent without leave (AWOL) in protest of US policy in the Middle East. In November 2007, he turned himself in to the military at Fort Knox and was discharged within three days.

Circello has remained very active with his work against US Foreign Policy, having worked with Iraq Veterans Against the War and the group Courage to Resist before joining March Forward!.

Circello's decision to go AWOL was his way of refusing to deploy to Afghanistan.

I had been fighting myself internally after my time in Iraq, about whether to deploy again," he explained to Truthout, "I ended up back in my old unit that was preparing to deploy, so at that moment I took it into my hands, and decided I wasn't going to go kill Afghans that had done nothing to me, or the American people. It was a defining moment for me."

According to Pentagon figures, since October 2001, more than 50,000 soldiers from all branches of the military have gone AWOL.

John Raughter is the communications director for the American Legion, an organization that describes itself as "a patriotic, war-time veterans organization, devoted to mutual helpfulness," according to its web site.

Raughter is clear about his stance on the rights of soldiers. "We have an all-volunteer force," he explained to Truthout, "These are not draftees. They swore an oath to obey the orders of the Commander in Chief."

According to Raughter, the American Legion does not, in any way, support AWOL soldiers or those who refuse to deploy to Iraq or Afghanistan. "Within reason, the military should be able to enforce obedience. Obedience and order are critical for the military to do its mission. People can't pick and choose which orders to obey and which not to [obey]. If it's a lawful order, they are obliged to obey."

Yet the oath enlisted soldiers must take before being deployed, reads:

"I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."

Marjorie Cohn, president of the National Lawyers Guild, is the co-author of "Rules of Disengagement: The Politics and Honor of Military Dissent" with Kathleen Gilberd. In the book, they write, "Rules of Engagement limit forms of combat, levels of force, and legitimate enemy targets, defining what is legal in warfare and what is not. (They're also) defined by an established body of international (and US) law that leaves no ambiguity."

Cohn and Gilberd argue that every US war since WWII has been illegal. Article 51 of the UN Charter only permits the "right of individual or collective self-defense if an armed attack occurs against a Member ... until the Security Council has taken measures to maintain international peace and security."

In addition, Article I, Section 8, Clause 11 (the war powers clause) of the US Constitution authorizes only both houses of Congress, not the president, to declare war. Nonetheless, that process has been followed only five times in our history and last used on December 8, 1941, after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor.

Nevertheless, Raughter believes soldiers who are dissenting against the occupations should have never joined the ranks. "If they are ethically opposed to wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, I would say that most of these people have enlisted or reenlisted since the beginning of the war. These wars were occurring when they made this oath of enlistment. It should have come to their minds."

Circello's response to those who refer to their tactic of encouraging soldiers to refuse deployment orders as being "unpatriotic or un-American?

"This is a tactic of demonization and we reject it," he explained, "The corporations profiting in these wars don't care about America or the American people. Is providing mercenaries to kill innocent people overseas, and bombs to kill innocent people, is that American and patriotic? The people who use these terms are demagogues. We can't forget that America was a land of institutionalized slavery, slavery was American, and folks like Dr. Martin Luther King, when they stood up to racism were called un-American ... so the same thing happens today. When you protest war, or call on soldiers to desert based on their own interest, you are called un-American."

Prysner and Circello's organization has stated, "March Forward! supports the right of all service members to refuse illegal and immoral orders. Orders to deploy to Afghanistan and Iraq are just that: illegal and immoral. We have no reason to fight in these wars, and we have every right to refuse to be a part of them.

Aid convoy for Gaza arrives in Istanbul amid sharp rhetoric

Aid convoy for Gaza arrives in Istanbul amid sharp rhetoric

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story misstated a previous political post held by George Galloway. This version reflects the correction.

Israel is gradually being isolated as a result of its military campaign in the Gaza Strip last December, according to the head of a relief organization yesterday, as an aid convoy destined for the Gaza Strip arrived in Istanbul.

“For the first time, the international community has seen that Israel was unfair and unjust in its campaign. The entire world considered Israel’s campaign unfair because Israel killed innocent women and children in Palestine,” said Bülent Yıldırım, the chairman of the Humanitarian Relief Foundation, or İHH, speaking at a joint news conference with British MP George Galloway.

Yıldırım spoke just after the 80-vehicle aid convoy arrived in Istanbul after crossing into Turkey through the Ipsala border gate. Some 70 more vehicles, including 47 from the United States, are expected to join the convoy and are waiting at the Mediterranean port city of Mersin.

The Viva Palestine convoy, the third of its kind, involves an international campaign aiming to support Palestinians in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.

The Viva Palestine convoy includes women and men, young and old, Muslim and non-Muslim, and leftists and rightists. They come from all over the world, including Australia, Malaysia, England and Ireland.

“Those who are from different religions will jointly act against the killings and the suffering of 1.5 million people in Gaza, which has been increasingly isolated,” said Yıldırım.

George Galloway, a British MP who is leading the Viva Palestine convoy, maintained that Sunday's warrant against Israel’s former foreign minister Zippi Livni was a historic moment for the Palestinians.

“This is a historic breakthrough in the land of Balfour; we had a warrant for the arrest of an Israeli war criminal,” said the British MP, leader of the Respect Party.

“She ran away as soon as she learned about the warrant. She has kept on running because we will pursue Livni and [former Prime Minister Ehud] Olmert and all Israeli generals for as long as they live to pay for this war crime,” he said.

On Sunday, a British court issued a warrant for the arrest of Livni over her role in Israel’s military operation against the Gaza Strip last year.

Galloway said the Viva Palestine Convoy aims to ensure the world will not forget the crime that was committed on Dec. 27th, 2008.

“We will try to relieve the blockade on the one-and-a-half million Palestinians who have been blocked in Gaza,” he said.

Galloway condemned Israel’s sense of democracy saying, “It is democracy that has killed innocent children just because it did not like their mothers’ and fathers’ voting,” he said.

True lies

from : http://blogs.aljazeera.net/middle-east

Somebody is not telling the truth about the circumstances behind moves to arrest Tzipi Livni, the Israeli opposition leader, in the UK.

It's one of those stories that comes out of nowhere and few actually know what happened.

It began when Al Jazeera reported that a British court had issued an arrest warrant for former Israeli foreign minister and Gaza war architect Tzipi Livni.

For hours, Israeli and British officials denied the report. Then British and Israeli media got wind of the story and began to report it. By the end of Monday, it was irrefutable.

Livni had cancelled a speaking engagement at the Jewish National Fund in the UK, but why and when were there still unanswered questions?

After a British court issued - then withdrew - the arrest warrant for Tzipi Livni, the Israeli government, after first denying the reports - suddenly shifted gears, going into damage control and launching a scathing criticism of the British government.

That's what we know. Here's where it gets murky...
Livni's people say she cancelled the event weeks ago because of scheduling conflicts. Israeli media say Livni cancelled on Sunday in a last minute move.
Somebody is not telling the truth.
Livni wanted to meet British PM Gordon Brown. He declined. The rationale behind Livni's desire to meet Brown, speculate some, was that if her trip was in an official capacity, she would have been granted diplomatic immunity.
When Brown declined to meet with the Kadima opposition chairwoman, the trip was reduced to a private one - leaving her susceptible to an arrest.
A similar arrest warrant against Ehud Barak, the Israeli defence minister, was deferred indefinitely because he had diplomatic immunity as a visiting official when he came to the UK in September.
Unfortunately, Livni did not enjoy that same immunity. It seems Barak was, after all, clever in joining PM Netanyahu's right-wing government - a move Livni and Kadima refused to do. At least Barak will now get to travel to the UK for a little bit longer hassle free!
What's surprising is that instead of standing up and defending its own legal system the British government is distancing itself from the issue and allowing Israel to clearly interfere in influencing its domestic affairs and governing system.
In a statement, the UK says it is determined to be "a strategic partner of Israel ... and that it is looking urgently at the implications of this case".
I would have expected the British government to say these are the laws of our land and we stand by them, but its not the first time the government seems to have caved to public pressure from Israel.
Back in 2005, then British foreign secretary Jack Straw apologised to his Israeli counterpart for a stand-off at Heathrow airport when an Israeli official wanted for alleged war crimes refused to get off a plane fearing he would have been arrested.
British security officials refused to arrest him on the plane fearing a confrontation with Israeli security agents would have led to a shoot out.
Let me see if I get this straight, the British foreign minister apologised that his government didn't actually enforce a standing order from its own judicial system?
But there could be a more interesting irony in all of this.
Israeli media have been carrying reactions from various politicians. One official put it this way: "British officials could find themselves in a similar situation due to airstrikes by British crews on population centres in Serbia, Iraq and Afghanistan"
Interesting? I wonder if the UK is more concerned with appeasing Israel or afraid of its own laundry being aired publicly if its officials start facing arrest warrants abroad.
